This image is a famous 1868 engraving titled "Genl Grant & his Family", created by John Sartain after a painting by William Cogswell. It depicts Ulysses S. Grant, the future 18th U.S. President, with his wife and four children.

Jesse Root Grant (son, youngest child): The boy in the kilt, holding a croquet mallet.
Ellen "Nellie" Grant (daughter, on the pony): The only daughter.
Ulysses S. Grant Jr. ("Buck") (son): The boy standing behind his mother.
Frederick Dent Grant (son, eldest child): The young man standing in a military (West Point) uniform.
Julia Dent Grant (wife, seated): Ulysses S. Grant's wife since 1848.
Ulysses S. Grant (father, standing): Civil War general and future U.S. President.
The original painting was commissioned in 1867, at the height of Ulysses S. Grant's popularity after the Civil War, and was widely reproduced as a print.
