Civil War: Field Letter Signed (“G. T. Beauregard”) 1861, Flag Design
Letter Signed (“G. T. Beauregard”), one page, Manassas, Virginia, September 5, 1861, addressed to General Joseph E. Johnston.
This is a clerk field copy signed by Beauregard in the field.
A historically significant Civil War letter written in the immediate aftermath of the First Battle of Bull Run, in which General Beauregard discusses the urgent need for a distinct battle flag. Referencing a “Flag Committee” vote rejecting proposed changes, Beauregard advocates for the adoption of separate “peace” and “war” flags and proceeds to describe in detail a proposed design for a new battle flag: a red field bearing two blue diagonal bars with stars, trimmed with white or gold fringe.
This correspondence represents a rare and important primary-source account documenting the conceptual development of what would become the Confederate battle flag (“Southern Cross”), one of the most recognizable symbols of the American Civil War.
The letter is signed “G. T. Beauregard, General.” Fold lines and minor staining consistent with age; overall very good condition.
An exceptional and museum-worthy manuscript of major historical importance.
