1776 New Jersey Colonial Currency 15 Shillings Issac Collins Leaf Print
1776 New Jersey Colonial Currency Fifteen Shillings Note Revolutionary War Isaac Collins Leaf Print
Description
Offered is an authentic 1776 Colonial New Jersey Fifteen Shillings note, dated March 25, 1776, and printed in Burlington, New Jersey by the renowned Revolutionary-era printer Isaac Collins.
Issued only months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this historic piece circulated during the opening year of the American Revolution. The note bears its original handwritten serial number (No. 1311) and period signatures.
The reverse features one of the most famous anti-counterfeiting devices used in colonial America: an impression taken directly from a natural leaf. Because no two leaves are exactly alike, these nature prints made counterfeiting extremely difficult. The reverse also carries the dramatic warning:
"To counterfeit is Death."
Printed while New Jersey remained officially under the authority of King George III, this note represents the final months of colonial government before independence transformed the American colonies into a new nation.
