1776 NEW JERSEY 30 SHILLINGS COLONIAL NOTE
This is an original New Jersey colonial currency note from the Revolutionary era.
Identification
Colony of New Jersey – Thirty Shillings
Dated March 25, 1776
Printed in Burlington by Isaac Collins.
Cataloged as:
Friedberg NJ-181
The note was issued just months before the Declaration of Independence and still references:
“His Majesty King GEORGE the Third”
which makes these transitional 1776 issues especially interesting historically. The reverse carries the warning:
“‘Tis Death to counterfeit.”
and features the famous engraved leaf nature print used as an anti-counterfeiting device. Isaac Collins was one of the finest colonial printers of the era.
What Makes This Note Desirable
complete and attractive
unusually strong margins
excellent red and black ink contrast
bold signatures
attractive leaf reverse
cleaner than most circulated survivors
The mica-flake paper and nature-print reverse are signature characteristics of these New Jersey issues.
Condition Assessment
I would estimate:
roughly Fine to Very Fine details
honest circulation
no major missing pieces
moderate folds only
very solid eye appeal
This is substantially nicer than many raw colonial notes encountered on eBay.
