Rare Early Calvin Coolidge Family Autograph Album (1884-1885)
Offered is an extraordinary nineteenth-century Floral Autograph Album containing a youthful autograph of future U.S. President Calvin Coolidge, signed at age 12 in Plymouth, Vermont.
The inscription reads:
"Your Cousin
J. Calvin Coolidge
Plymouth
Feb. 12, 1885"
This small autograph album was kept by Georgia Wilder of Plymouth, Vermont and contains signatures from family members, relatives, and friends.
Included with the album is a detailed provenance description stating:
"12 YEAR OLD CALVIN COOLIDGE SIGNS AN AUTOGRAPH ALBUM KEPT BY A GIRL COUSIN IN PLYMOUTH, VERMONT IN 1884 AND 1885. IT ALSO CONTAINS SIGNATURES OF HIS MOTHER WHO DIED A YEAR LATER ON HER 39TH BIRTHDAY AND OF HIS ONLY SISTER WHO DIED IN 1890 AGED ONLY 14, AND OF HIS MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS WHO WERE ALSO THE GIRL'S GRANDPARENTS."
The provenance further notes:
"The 6th entry on the front of the 5th page reads 'Your cousin, J. Calvin Coolidge, Plymouth, Vt. Feb. 12, 1885.' Coolidge, whose given names were John Calvin, dropped the John later..."
