1764 Matthew Thornton Autograph Document Signer Of Declaration
MATTHEW THORNTON AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT FRAGMENT
SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
Rare colonial American autograph document fragment signed by Matthew Thornton (1714–1803), signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire.
Dated March 24, 1764, this manuscript predates the American Revolution by more than a decade and was executed while Thornton served as a Justice of the Peace in colonial New Hampshire.
The manuscript reads in part:
"Province of New Hampshire ... March 24th 1764 ... personally appeared ... before Matthew Thornton, Justice of Peace"
and bears Thornton's bold autograph signature.
Matthew Thornton was one of the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence and a prominent physician, jurist, and statesman. Signatures of Declaration signers remain among the most sought-after fields in American autograph collecting, and Thornton is considerably scarcer than many better-known Founding Fathers.
Unlike a simple cut signature, this example remains attached to a substantial portion of the original legal document, preserving the date, colonial New Hampshire provenance, and Thornton's official capacity as Justice of the Peace.
