George Read Autograph Manuscript Declaration Signer Delaware Land Case c1780
Rare Multi-Page Holograph Legal Manuscript by a Signer of the Declaration of Independence
Description
GEORGE READ AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT – "STATE OF CASE"
SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
An exceptional colonial American manuscript entirely in the hand of George Read (1733–1798), one of Delaware's most important Founding Fathers and a signer of both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.
This substantial multi-page autograph manuscript appears to be a legal memorandum or "State of Case" prepared by Read concerning a complicated land ownership, mortgage, inheritance, and family property dispute. The narrative references events dating to the 1750s and discusses land purchases, mortgages, occupancy rights, family agreements, and claims of ownership.
The reverse bears an apparent contemporary docket reading:
"Geo. Read's State of Case"
Unlike the brief court orders and endorsements most frequently encountered from Read, this manuscript preserves extensive historical content in his own hand and provides a fascinating glimpse into the legal practice of one of the nation's Founding Fathers.
George Read served in the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, signed the United States Constitution in 1787, served as President (Governor) of Delaware, United States Senator, and later Chief Justice of Delaware. He remains one of the most important figures in early American political history.
