Original State of New York military commission appointing Elisha Waters as Ensign of a company in the 24th Regiment of Infantry of the New York State Militia.
Issued at Albany on March 27, 1819, during the administration of Governor DeWitt Clinton, the commission authorizes Waters to assume command as Ensign and to exercise and discipline the officers and soldiers of his company in accordance with the laws governing the New York militia. The commission passed through the Secretary's Office on March 31, 1819 and bears the original signature of Secretary of State John Van Ness Yates.
A particularly attractive feature is the large embossed New York State seal for military commissions, displaying the American eagle in exceptional detail. The engraved heading, "The People of the State of New-York, by the Grace of God Free and Independent," is one of the most recognizable designs used on early nineteenth-century New York state commissions.
