1807 Henri Jacques Guillaume Clarke Autograph Letter Signed – Governor-General of Berlin – Future Napoleon Minister of War
An original autograph letter signed by Henri Jacques Guillaume Clarke (1765–1818), later Duc de Feltre, one of Napoleon Bonaparte's most trusted military administrators and Minister of War.
Written in Berlin on 16 May 1807, this letter was composed while Clarke served as Governor-General of occupied Berlin, only three months before Napoleon appointed him Minister of War of the French Empire. The letter therefore belongs to an especially desirable transitional period in Clarke's distinguished military career.
Addressed to M. de Bonin, Director of the Cadet Corps at Stolpe, Clarke discusses the operating expenses of the military educational establishment. He explains that he has referred the matter to the chief financial administrator for payment and notes that housing cadets with their parents provides an important economy under current conditions. The correspondence offers a firsthand glimpse into the administrative challenges of governing occupied Prussia following Napoleon's victories in the War of the Fourth Coalition.
