An original official Commonwealth of Massachusetts tax broadside issued for the Year 1801, completed in manuscript for the town of Long Meadow (Longmeadow), Massachusetts.
Printed in Boston under the authority of Peleg Coffin, Treasurer and Receiver-General of the Commonwealth and former member of the United States Congress, this document directed local selectmen and assessors to levy taxes pursuant to the Massachusetts tax act of February 28, 1801. The broadside is dated March 23, 1801, and retains the handsome engraved Massachusetts state arms at the head.
The manuscript entries assess Long Meadow for $232.50, together with an additional $10.00 assessment for representatives, for a total tax of $242.50.
Documents such as this were working government forms intended for temporary administrative use. Most were discarded after the tax rolls were completed, making surviving examples from the early Federal period increasingly scarce. This piece provides an excellent glimpse into the mechanics of taxation in the young American republic only a quarter century after Independence.
