Dated 1849 and signed by Buchanan as Secretary of State under President Polk.
Archivally de-acidified and backed. Very rare.
Measures 10 1/4 x 11 3/4.
Buchanan was the 15th U.S. President. He was a Pennsylvania native born near Mercerville. First elected to Congress as a Federalist in 1820, he later abandoned that decaying party for the Democrats. Appointed minister to Russia in 1831, and afterwards elected to the U.S. Senate. President during the “Secession Winter” of 1860, following the election of Abraham Lincoln. Supported the Union during the Civil War as a War Democrat.
