1878 Rear Admiral John Rodgers Autograph Letter Signed – U.S. Naval Observatory – Benjamin A. Gould – Smithsonian – Solar Eclipse
An outstanding autograph letter signed by Rear Admiral John Rodgers (1812–1882), Superintendent of the United States Naval Observatory, written on official Naval Observatory letterhead from Washington, D.C., July 22, 1878.
Addressed to the eminent American astronomer Dr. Benjamin Apthorp Gould, founder and director of the Argentine National Observatory at Córdoba, the letter acknowledges receipt, through the Smithsonian Institution, of two copies of Gould's Anales de la Oficina Meteorológica Argentina, Tomo I: Clima de Buenos Aires.
Rodgers advises that he has forwarded several important United States scientific publications in exchange, including:
- Researches on the Motion of the Moon
- Instructions for Observing the Solar Eclipse of 1878
- The narrative of the U.S. Polar Expedition, edited by Rear Admiral Charles Henry Davis.
