How can you distinguish between a first and subsequent edition?
The first edition has no tinted background, although some have a printed background. All subsequent editions have a rounded or squared tinted background, usually greyish-white or light blue, made to resemble clouds or sky.
The script at the bottom of most first editions is italicized. All subsequent editions are in block letters. However, plates 1 through 150 and 186 through189 in the first edition are in block letters. Plates 136 - 150 in the first edition have "Endicott, New York" but all others have "Bowen, Philadelphia."
