An original seventeenth-century issue of The London Gazette, No. 3497, published May 15–18, 1699, and printed by Edw. Jones in the Savoy during the reign of King William III.
Founded in 1665, The London Gazette is the oldest continuously published English newspaper and served as the official newspaper of the English government, reporting royal proclamations, foreign intelligence, diplomatic affairs, military movements, court appointments, and commercial notices.
This issue contains extensive reports from Madrid, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Hamburg, Paris, Brussels, Warsaw, and other European centers, including coverage of bread shortages in Madrid, European diplomacy, Ottoman affairs, military developments, and English court news. The reverse also features an engaging selection of late seventeenth-century advertisements, including notices for newly published books, an auction of a private library, horse racing, bankruptcy proceedings, and commercial announcements.
Printed on a single folio sheet in the classic two-column format, this example retains attractive wide margins and the original imprint:
