1867 Civil War Mortgage Deed – Camden, Maine – $2 & 50¢ U.S. Mortgage Revenue Stamps – Embossed Seal
An original Civil War-era mortgage deed executed in Camden, Knox County, Maine, dated April 1867, documenting a $2,400 mortgage from Thomas Ainsley to Samuel E. Carleton and Howard M. Carleton.
The document is completed entirely in period manuscript on a printed mortgage form and retains its original $2.00 red Mortgage Revenue stamp and 50-cent blue Mortgage Revenue stamp, both tied by manuscript cancellation. These documentary revenue stamps were required under the Internal Revenue Acts enacted during the Civil War, making surviving intact examples increasingly desirable to collectors.
